Abuse – Elder or Sexual

Protecting Seniors from Abuse and Exploitation

Elder abuse is a tragic reality that affects vulnerable seniors, often at the hands of those they trust. At Boca Elder Law, we are dedicated to protecting the rights, dignity, and safety of older adults who have experienced abuse — whether in a nursing home, assisted living facility, or within the community.

Elder abuse includes any act (or failure to act) that causes harm, exploitation, or distress to a person aged 60 or older. This harm can be physical, emotional, financial, or sexual in nature. Seniors who are isolated, have cognitive impairments, or require assistance with daily living are especially at risk. Shaumyan and Derbarseghian LLP+1

What is Elder Abuse?

Abuse of older adults can take many forms, including but not limited to:

Physical Abuse

Financial Exploitation
Unauthorized use of a senior’s finances or property. This can include theft, coercing changes to legal documents, or misuse of powers of attorney. Shaumyan and Derbarseghian LLP

Sexual Abuse
Any non-consensual sexual contact, coerced sexual acts, forced nudity, or involvement in sexual activity that the elder did not agree to — including contact by staff, other residents, visitors, or caregivers. Shaumyan and Derbarseghian LLP+1

Recognizing the Warning Signs

It’s critical to identify signs of abuse early. Common indicators include:

  • Unexplained injuries or bruising

  • Sudden changes in behavior or withdrawal

  • Unusual financial transactions or missing assets

  • Fear or anxiety around specific caregivers or facility staff

  • Signs consistent with sexual assault such as unexplained genital injuries or sexually transmitted infections, especially without consent. LegalClarity

Your loved one may be unable to voice concerns — that’s why awareness and vigilance are essential.
